19.11.2009 - The World Triathlon Corporation launches top athletes' program to provide support for the new anti-doping initiative.
The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) goes new ways in fighting the doping abuse. What remains desirable in other sports has become reality in triathlon. Not long ago, the WTC has launched a new anti-doping initiative by which the professional athletes as well as the best amateurs might be tested in their trainings following the random sampling principle as well as on the competition day. The tests will be coordinated by independent organizations such as the WADA and the national anti-doping agencies.

In addition to the tightened anti-doping program, the WTC introduces a new Ironman Pro Membership Program for professional athletes aiming to standardize the Ironman events throughout the world. Starting February 2010, each professional athlete will have to enter into the new top athletes' program in order to be able to continue to participate in Ironman and 70.3-Ironman events. With this program, the WTC expects a long due consistence in terms of prize money, world championships as well as size and quality of the participant field. The annual contribution for the Pro Membership Program is of 750 USD for the professional athlete, which automatically gives him the authorization to start in all Ironman and 70.3-Ironman events as well as in the world championships. In case a top athlete decides himself for the Pro Membership Program, he declares at the same time to agree with the new anti-doping program and might be tested any time in the training our on the competition day.

Even though the new top athletes program contains some changes, it is nevertheless welcomed by the organizers as well as the athletes. Craig Alexander, the actual Ironman world champion, is happy: “The Ironman Pro Membership Program is good for the athletes and good for our sport. The implementation of its Anti-Doping initiative is long overdue and hopefully will ensure a fairer sport."

The new program also brings about some changes for the organizers (prize money and slot allocation). Patrick Schmid, race director of the Ironman events in Switzerland, sees the changes in a positive way: “With the new Ironman Membership Program, new standards will be set in terms of quality of the professional athletes' starting fields as well as the fight against doping. This way, not only will the triathlon sport become more professional, but also, we signalize at the same time that we are taking actions against the doping abuse as organizers and that we want a fair and clean sport.”
